Random Artist Profile: Barry Smith Of Jesus In Montana
This year the Fringe presents Random Artists Profiles. We’ve put all the shows in a big black hat and for each newsletter we draw a show and profile it. The first show is Jesus in Montana by Barry Smith. Smith, who already won two Fringe awards, one in New York for Outstanding Solo and one in Winnipeg for Best of Fest, is coming to Vancouver to talk about his life in a Doomsday Cult. Between his Fringe circuit appearances, we had a chat with him.
Barry Smith Tells All In Jesus In Montana
Fringe: What was a typical breakfast when you were part of the cult?
Barry: The miracle of the loaves and fishes is well known from the Bible. There was an equally miraculous, yet not as well publicized, breakfast version: the miracle of the waffles and link sausage.
Fringe: Is the breakfast different on doomsday?
Barry: Yes. You really want to load up on carbs before the Apocalypse.
Fringe: What would your Last Breakfast be?
Barry: A buffet brunch, featuring Jesus’ famous turning water into cappuccino trick.
Fringe: You also created the show Me, My Stuff And I. What is your favourite chore?
Barry: Alphabetizing shoes, furniture, office supplies, coins, etc…
Fringe: What is your tactic to avoid doing the chore you really hate?
Barry: I’ve been known to fake my own death.
Fringe: You created a show covering the different jobs you’ve ever had (Every Job I’ve Ever Had), which you performed at the Vancouver Fringe in 2010. What job would you like to try and why?
Barry: Faith healer. Getting paid to slap people in the forehead on stage would be a dream job. Also, faith healers tend to drive nicer cars than I currently do so…
